LE POULIGUEN

If its history goes back a long way (the port of Le Pouliguen was for a long time the hub for the transport of the salt from the salt marshes of Guérande), the town itself wasn’t truly established before the arrival of the first summer visitors back in the middle of  the XIXth century.  These new visitors were quick to adopt this little sheltered seaside town as their own and built chalets along la plage du Nau and the coast at Penchâteau, more than a little incongruous alongside the traditional town houses of the Guérande Peninsula :  the rich dwellings of the big and powerful, those of the traders, the fleet owners, ships’ captains residences;  the modest houses of the fishermen and tradesmen.  Today Le Pouliguen still has a certain ‘cachet’ and continues to stand out from its famous neighbour La Baule, whose bay it completes with la plage Benoît. A picturesque place to stop along La Côte d'Amour, famous for its fishing and pleasure boating activities, its shop lined streets and its  beach clubs, Le Poulguen remains a paradise for families.
